Visitors to Southeast Dominica will be traveling by car. There are a variety of options to consider:
Rental Cars
Driving is done on the left-hand side and roads are narrow, steep and winding. It is common to be required to pull over so oncoming traffic can pass. There is no speed limit on the island apart from a 20mph limit in the city of Roseau. There are very few guard rails and no reflectors on the roads. The locals have lived here all of their lives and have been driving these same few roads just as long. They know where every pothole and hazard is located. To the visitor, it seems they are driving very fast but to the resident, normal foreknowledge of conditions dictates appropriate speed. Good defensive driving sense should be used by visitors hiring a car.
Foreign visitors will be required to purchase a temporary diving license at the auto rental agency at a cost of US$30. The license is valid for 30 days and must be renewed in person at each 30-day interval. Holders of international driver's licenses are not exempt and must still purchase the local license.
Honking is more of a hello gesture than one of annoyance. It is also recommended to give a few quick taps on the horn before entering a blind curve to alert oncoming traffic. Someone honking from behind would like to pass; this may also be indicated with a flash of the headlights.

Public Transport
Minivans patrol the coastal roads circling the island. Cost is approximately $2.00 EC for a ride. There are not exactly set stops so it is important to stand with locals also standing on the side of the road or flag down minivans that have a name printed on the front windshield.
